Things to Do in Denver: Capitol Hill Walking Tour of Historic Homes

If you are local or just visiting, the Capitol Hill Walking Tour put on by Historic Denver is a great way to learn about the history of Denver. You meet your guide in front of the Molly Brown House then the tour is roughly 1.2 miles and 75 minutes long. You learn not only about the famous architects of these homes, but the people who built them and lived there. Many of the architects and clients who built these homes are famous names among Denver, such as Frank Edbrooke who designed the Brown Palace and the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion to William Lang who designed the Molly Brown House along with many others.

The tour also includes Poet’s Row and a few apartment buildings for additional architectural styles. Many of these grand homes have been converted on the inside into condos or apartments, but thanks to preservation efforts the exteriors must remain as they are. There are still a few of these amazing homes that haven’t changed much and have been converted to inn’s and bed and breakfasts open to anyone who wants to stay there. Our tour guide recommended having Sunday brunch at the Capitol Hill Mansion Bed and Breakfast so that will be next on the list of places to try. Only one home was open for us to able to go inside; that was the Sheedy Mansion where they have been restoring the home to it’s former glory with the leather panels on the walls to the intricate wood trim details.

There are multiple tour days and times throughout the week. You can purchase tickets here: http://www.historicdenver.org/programs/historic-denver-tours/
